KIT | Autonomous Driving

Automated vehicles are a key part of future mobility systems. In order for
these vehicles to be able to operate autonomously and safely in traffic, they
must identify their surroundings to a high level of accuracy. As part of the
Opticar project, experts from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT),
from the FZI Research Centre for Information Technology at KIT and from
Myestro Interactive GmbH have developed a research and test platform for
stereo camera systems. Images recorded by STEREO CAMERAS allow
for depth perception of the environment and provide information about the
position, distance and speed of objects. Alongside sensor systems such as
lidar, radar and ultrasound, wide-angle stereo cameras also enable an auto-
nomous vehicle to recognise its own position and that of objects in its envi-
ronment. This is essential for accurate driving manoeuvres, such as over-
taking or lane changes. The goal of this collaborative project is to make
these systems more precise and robust. © KIT

            Internet of Things

The Internet of Things (IoT) is one of the most important aspects of the digi-
tal transformation that is currently taking place in Europe. It is spreading
rapidly and allows vehicles, buildings and other objects with electronic
components, software, sensors, actuators and network connections to be
connected to the internet. These objects can then collect, process and share
data. The Scott pan-European research project (Secure Connected Trustable
Things) is now starting under the leadership of Virtual Vehicle. The IoT pro-
ject involves 57 partners from 12 countries and aims to identify compre-
hensive, COST-EFFECTIVE SOLUTIONS for secure and reliable
wireless connectivity. The specific applications include intelligent and inte- © Virtual Vehicle
